Artist's Description
This is my favorite bridge, having lived in Astoria NY in the 70's, I spent a lot of time in Astoria sketching and taking photos of this bridge. I took one of my pen and ink sketches, scanned and finished the drawing in the computer, using photos and sketches as references. The bridge was built in 1916, the heavy steel arch is suppossed to support 60 locomotives at a time, is now used by Amtrak and freight lines. It runs over the Hell Gate section of the East River, known for killer currents, and connects Astoria Queens with the Bronx.
About Steve Breslow
Born 1949 New York City. MFA Queens College, past experience as printmaking instructor, multiple exhibits in the New York area with several awards for printmaking. Day job with the Social Security Administration, with occasional time off to draw some pictures and take photographs. Most recently - - 2nd prize for graphics, White Plains juried art fair and single person exhibits at the Rockville Centre and Hewlett Woodmere Public Libraries of prints and photos. My initial experience was as a printmaker, creating mostly black and white engravings and etchings, with images that ranged from realistic to surreal. Nice of you to say that - I grew up as an etcher/engraver - kind of started doing these computer prints when I lost access to an etching press, and have always kept the same style and approach.
